Abstract: Un-aerated chute flows are prone to cavitation damage if the cavitation index is below a certain limit. The chute aerator was identified as the most efficient technical means to counter this damage. The development of the chute aerator is reviewed based on the main advances, from 1945 in the United States, to the Russian works in the 1970s, the papers of the 1980s presented in Brazil and Switzerland, to finally describe the effect of turbulence on deflector flow. The actors are also shortly presented with biographies indicating a background to their education, career and awards.
