Abstract: Flip buckets as jet-generating structures are important spillway elements. The deflector is an alternative to flip buckets with constructional ease yet similar hydraulic features. Deflector-generated jets are investigated herein in terms of air concentration characteristics compared to drop-generated jets. It was found that the air concentration development related to the jet disintegration process depends on the jet black water core length for drops and deflectors. Large air concentrations result from steep deflectors and high approach flow Froude numbers. They reduce the scour potential of impinging jets, such that reduced countermeasures are required.
