Abstract: Basinwide flood-risk mapping has become semi-standard in the UK. The undue dominance of hydraulic modeling over hydrological analysis is discussed, and a number of flaws noted. It is suggested that the study of inter-site dependence in flooding can contribute to improved practice in flood-risk mapping. This will only happen if river modelers in the UK acknowledge the neglect of data analysis.
