Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the viability of a concept fishway for use as a fish passage device within the Fairford Dam. The study was completed at the request of Manitoba Water Stewardship. The research was conducted at the Acres Manitoba Hydraulics Research and Testing Facility between January 1,2008 and April 1,2008. The major components of the project included the design and construction of a scale model of one bay of the Fairford Dam and the concept fishway, analysis of water velocities at the fishway portals and visual evaluation of flow characteristics within the fishway structure. The hydraulic analysis of the concept fishway was conducted for both open bay and closed bay configuration. For each configuration, tests were conducted by varying the flow rate within the flume and measuring the corresponding difference between the upstream and downstream water depths. Water velocity at the fishway portals was calculated based on rating curves and/or measured using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Analysis of the research data demonstrated that based on the Manitoba Stream Crossing Guidelines for the Protection of Fish and Fish Habitat, the water velocities at the fishway portal would pose a velocity barrier to fish passage under the majority of operating conditions.
