Abstract: Through experimental study of the vertical mixing behaviors in the stratified water, the retarded tracer jet diffusion at the thermocline layer was observed. The stronger the stratification, the more seriously retarded phenomenon would be. Some small tracer drops may penetrate the thermocline layer into the hypolimnion layer even the main tracer cloud was retarded. According to the shape of the tracer cloud, it can be called as a “bud.” In the “bud,” the drops were isolated away from the main cloud and diffused with the surround cold water in the hypolimnion layer; so the vertical distribution value of a tracer would be more than expected. The results also showed that the stronger the stratification, the smaller diameters of the drops would be in a “bud.”
