Abstract: When water is withdrawn from a vertically stratified fluid, at sufficiently low Froude numbers the withdrawn fluid comes from a narrow layer adjacent to the level of the sink. This phenomenon known as Selective Withdrawal has widespread application in management of reservoirs. The presence of a sill or contraction in a reservoir could have significant effect on the evolution of selective withdrawal. In this work, the evolution of selective withdrawal of a two-layer fluid through a point sink is investigated experimentally in a reservoir with a bottom sill. Flow field is captured by Particle Image Velocimetry. Empirical equations are obtained for the discharge ratio of the layers in terms of independent parameters.
