Abstract: Experimental investigations to determine the incipient motion and the trajectory of a sand bag are reported in this paper to develop efficient levee-breach closure procedures and accurate relationships for sand bag size. A 1:50 scale hydraulic model of the 17t h Street Canal breach caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was used. The model is based on the Froude similitude relationships. The motion of sandbags were recorded by digital particle tracking Velocimetry (DPTV) technique which is used to understand the mechanics of particle motion during the closure of a levee breach. Two high-definition CCD cameras with a resolution of 640x480 at 200 frames/second recorded the motion of sandbags from above. This information allows the definition of particle motion, i.e. deposition, resting, rolling, and saltation. Software based on DPTV technique was developed to track the location of the sand bag, to plot their trajectories, and to determine the three-dimensional velocity components. The experimental set-up and test procedures are described in detail and the experimental results are presented.
