Experiences from Modifications of Curved Spillway Channels in Dam Rebuilding Projects

Abstract: To safely discharge higher design floods, a number of curved spillway channels need to be modified. The design flood of a dam is often released at higher reservoir level, thus giving rise to higher flow velocity in the channel. The combination of more water and higher velocity results in accentuated non-uniform channel flows. The unfavorably distributed flow into a stilling basin aggravates also the energy dissipation. The curved spillway channels of several dams are modified in physical model tests. The adopted countermeasures include heightened sidewalls, prolonged spillway piers, new partition wall, streamlining discontinuities, differential bottom elevation in cross section, addition of deflector on sidewalls or a combination of several measures. The project experiences are summarized in this paper, with emphasis on flow patterns at high discharges and countermeasures.
