Abstract: This paper presents a novel laboratory based three-dimensional photogrammetric measurement system for the monitoring of alluvial bed topography allowing for repeated, instantaneous recording of dune beds during water flow. The system consists of an automated camera orientation unit and is based on bar coded markers and a grid projection unit for identification of bed topography. The specifications of the system are discussed and its performance is demonstrated using consecutive topography measurements of three-dimensional dune fields obtained in laboratory experiments. The potential of these data to study the physics of dune formation, dispersion, and migration is shown.
