Abstract: The dam-break flow is an extreme example of a free-surface transient flow where different time and spatial scales coexist. Experimental measurements have been conducted in the past, focusing mainly on free-surface elevation and wave celerity. But, in order to better understand the dam-break flow it is important to study the velocity field behaviour. In this paper we present experimental measurements of the water surface and velocity profile evolution in a dam-break flow using non-intrusive techniques. The water level evolution was measured using digital imagery and acoustic probes. The velocity field was obtained with Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). The main objective of this work was to develop an adapted PTV algorithm to determine the velocity field, and to assess the limitations of the method.
