Abstract: Current usage of Rhodamine WT ranges almost exclusively on “time of travel” tracer studies applications because both theoretical and practical difficulties avoid accurate quantitative discharge measurements. In this paper an alternative approach is discussed using a time dependent longitudinal dispersion coefficient in Fick′s equation which allows understanding how is actually plume dynamics in early stages, despite the current restrictions considered in state of the art. This new view accomplishes this goal by means a state function which tell us when the tracer reaches the “Complete Mixing” condition, a primary first restriction to get accuracy in tracer discharge measurements. A real time software tool based in this methodology is presented and its calibration considerations are discussed.
