Abstract: Damages to hundreds of bridges consequently to recent extreme floods in the Czech Republic initiated implementation of a research project, whose objectives were to examine causal factors of bridge destructions and to propose measures for effective bridge protection against floods. In the project, which was carried out by staff of T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute in Prague, the derivation of suitable measures was based on simulation of the flow conditions during extreme floods by using a hydraulic model (developed by the Institute) in combination with a mathematical model. The paper describes results of the simulation by the hydraulic model, particularly those concerning bridge protection against erosion and jamming, and summarizes main conclusions and recommendations from the project implementation.
