Abstract: Spanish government is making an effort to improve the fishways in rivers. And, therefore, it has founded a research line developed between the CEDEX and the University of A Coruna (UDC) to optimize the hydraulic design of fishways and make design recommendations. It has been built a fishway in the Hydraulics Laboratory of CEDEX, designed to perform tests with fish. To improve the analysis of the hydraulic operation of fishway has been performed a SPH-3D model of the fishway of fish, which has been calibrated with experimental data, with a good results. The results of numerical tests have helped to analyze the experimental data of the physical model, and have revealed a hydrodynamic instability that can only be assessed in physical model. The tests with fish of different species on the fishway of CEDEX show its need for hydraulic optimization. This requires knowing the behavior of fish in each zone, which in turn are linked to its fluidynamic that can be analyzed rapidly and economy with a model SPH.
