Abstract: Step-pool morphology has been widely studied during the last two decades. More particularly, how step-pools are formed remains a challenging question. Among other possibilities, the step-pool has been considered to be residual antidune bedforms. In this paper, we test the ability of an antidune model to reproduce step-pool geometries. A data set was built with available data from the literature. The results show that although fundamental differences exist between the antidunes used to build the model and the step-pools used in the data set (more particularly concerning the grain size distribution), the model adequately reproduces the step-pool wavelength. Many questions remain unresolved by this study. However, the results argue for antidunes being at the origin of step-pools, although antidunes may only partially account for step-pool formation.
