Abstract: An experimental investigation about the flow through ship lock valves (reverse Tainter gates) has been carried out in a physical model built at the “Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul”, Brazil. The initial tests in this model were developed in steady state flow for gate openings of 10,30,50,60,70,80 and 100% of the conduit height and for discharges varying from 22 to 220 l/s. This paper presents some results of the measured mean and instant pressures describing their behavior along the conduit bottom and ceiling. An estimative of the flow contraction downstream of the gate is presented and shows a good agreement with the literature.
