Abstract: Sediment management in fluvial systems is gaining importance due to technical, economical and ecological problems. For the representative measurement of suspended sediment transport rate and load not only the temporal but also the spatial variation of suspended sediments has to be considered. That is why the Austrian measurement strategy includes the use of a combination of direct and indirect monitoring methods. Besides turbidity sensors that continuously record the concentration at one point of the river also samples over the cross section are taken to measure the spatial suspended sediment distribution. As these measurements are very time consuming a study on the application of acoustic devices for suspended sediment monitoring was done. Approaches to optimize the measurement strategy by reducing the amount of suspended sediment samples, using, ADCPs showed feasible results. In this paper the results of the Austrian measurement sites Admont at the Enns river and Dellach at the Drau river are discussed.
