Abstract: A hydrodynamic model solving two-dimensional shallow water equations in the framework of unstructured meshes and finite volume methods to predict the typhoon-induced storm surge around the Taiwan coast has been developed in this study. The storm surge model has been incorporated into the general-purpose twodimensional free surface modeling software SEC-HY21 that has facilities of grid generation and flow visualization. Numerical experiments on the effect of wind drag coefficient formulations and parameterized cyclone wind models on the storm surge modeling are conducted. The simulated results are compared with tide gauge observations along the northern Taiwan coast and satisfactory agreements are obtained. The developed storm surge model can be used in real-time mode as a typhoon is approaching Taiwan or used to generate a data bank of pre-computed surges of the historical typhoon events for statistical analysis and rapid forecasting.
