Abstract: Synthetic velocity profiles are used to determine requirements for sampling discharge with acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs). The simulations allow the effects of instrument characteristics, sampling parameters, and properties of the flow to be studied systematically. For mid-section measurements, the required averaging time is expressed as a function of the sample interval and a time scale proportional to the time scale of the large eddies. For transect measurements, the maximum error in discharge decreases as the total number of samples increases and increases as the ratio of the standard deviation of the ADCP noise and mean velocity increases.
