Abstract: This paper presents results of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent flow in an open channel through a staggered array of rigid, emergent cylinders. The flow region and setup are selected to correspond to completed laboratory experiments. The cylinder Reynolds number is Re D= 1340, and the distance between two cylinders is s=10D, in which D is the cylinder diameter. The numerical simulation program had been extended and covers two different cylinder Reynolds numbers and three different distances between cylinders; Re D= 500 and 1340; s=10D, 5D, and 2.5D. Drag forces, composed into pressure and friction drag, exerted on the cylinders are calculated explicitly, and normalized drag forces and drag coefficients are compared with previous studies to investigate the effect of the cylinder Reynolds number and the cylinder density. It is found that pressure drag dominates over viscous drag for both Reynolds numbers reported. However the ratio of pressure drag to friction drag increases with an increase in Reynolds number. It is further found that the ratio of pressure drag to friction drag is independent of cylinder density.
