Abstract: Numerical simulation of flow and transport characteristics in a uniformly sized multi-chamber ozone contactor model is performed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) model, respectively. The velocity distribution predicted by the RANS model is in good agreement with the distribution of time-averaged velocities as predicted by the LES. Both time-averaged and instantaneous flow patterns suggest the flow is characterized by the occurrence of large-scale turbulent structures leading to extensive shortcircuiting between chambers and internal recirculation within the chambers. The flow is also highly three dimensional, as secondary vortices develop in the spanwise direction. The results of the LES are verified using previously reported tracer test results obtained from laboratory experiments.
