Abstract: Influences of dams on community structures of aquatic insects which inhabit river substrata have been studied extensively. However, there are few studies dealing with flood control dams. The purpose of the present study is to clarify influences of a flood control dam on the community structures of aquatic insects. Field surveys were carried out in the upper and lower reaches of the Mino River Dam located in the northern Osaka, Japan in the autumn of 2007. It is shown that the community structures in the reach which can be submerged by the dam lake water in case of floods were quite different from those in the other reaches. Deteriorations of the community qualities in downstream reaches of dams, which are often reported in the preceding studies dealing with water supply dams, were not confirmed in this study.
