Abstract: A network of German and Brazilian universities, research institutions and governmental agencies, involving private companies on both sides is working on the Development of Improved Strategies for Sustainable Environmental Management in Brazilian Harbors. To this end, a combination of numerical modeling, field measurements, remote sensing, IT-strategies and socio-economic approaches are applied. Two case studies in Paranagua and Rio Grande are under way and establish web based routines for both data ex-change and data documentation. A common web portal harbours. wtz-brasilien. org has been set up as central information platform in order to provide an integrated view of and access to the coastal information collected, created and made available throughout this project. The information infrastructure relies on ISO19115 metadata and uses OGC web services to access data repositories. Guided by the elements of a “Coastal Zone Metadata Profile”, standardized data documentation in Portuguese/English/German is created with a novel multilingual metadata editor. This is the backbone for discovery services on the web portal, which also makes use of bounding boxes and bounding polygons as selection criteria.
