Abstract: The Jingjiang Reach located in the middle Yangtze River is famous for it's flowing through the city of Jingzhou. After the foundation of new China, with the continuous construction of bank protection engineering, the anti-scouring ability of riverbank has been strengthened, and then the lateral bed deformation has been controlled, However, a certain degree of channel adjustment occurred in local regions of the reach and the variations of lateral profiles are seriously at some sections, bank collapse are still very frequent. This analysis summarizes the characteristics of recent river evolution in the Jingjiang Reach; the relationship was analysed between variations of different channel adjustment patterns and bank failure patterns using the observed data. Come to conclusion: the mainstream line changes, river channel erosion may induce bank collapse, at the same time the lack of effective control of bank collapse will affect the development of river.
