Abstract: A theoretical method is developed to calculate the drag resulting from floating stationary ice cover over riverine flow. The development of the drag formulation takes into account turbulent exchange between the ice influence zone and the bed influence zone. Comparisons to observed flume data show good agreement between the proposed new ice drag formulation and observations. The model is applicable to open as well as confined river reaches without any constraints on the roughness values of the ice or the bed.
