Abstract: This paper addresses numerical investigation of the hydrodynamics of a rectangular retention pond with sloping sides. The aim of the analysis was to determine the influence of vertical locations of the inlet and outlet on pond performance. Eighteen different combinations were compared at three different vertical locations of the inlet and outlet. The Reynolds-averaged transport equation was solved using a 3D finite volume numerical model, enabling estimation of the transport of tracer in the pond. The simulation results of the present study show that the vertical locations of the inlet and outlet have a significant influence on pond hydraulics. Placing the inlet and outlet at mid-depth positions results in the lowest short-circuiting. Also, the location of the inlet controls the flow pattern in the pond.
