Abstract: The Ovens River, Victoria, Australia, is the only largely unregulated catchment of the Murray River. It has a high ecological significance, with parts of the Ovens nominated under the Heritage Rivers Act 1992 in recognition of the many significant features of these areas. The catchment is diverse ranging from riverine plains near the Murray River and broad alluvial valleys around Myrtleford, to rugged alpine peaks and plateaux around the Great Dividing Range. This paper presents a hydrological model of the Ovens River developed using Source Catchments (e Water, Australia 2010). The Source Catchments model uses the SIMHYD rainfall runoff model to determine stream contributions from 25 sub-catchments. Parameterisation of the model was conducted using PEST (Watermark Numerical Computing, Australia 2010). This paper demonstrates how the prediction of catchment hydrology with the SYMHYD model is improved through changes in optimization techniques and by incorporating within stream extractions, storages and routing.
