Abstract: In the last century, the increase in reservoir water storage and the expansion of irrigated farmlands have caused drastic changes in the hydrology, sediment load and river-floodplain interaction of the Ebro river. These changes result also in an alteration of the fluvial geomorphic activity. The river-floodplain interaction can be studied using numerical modelling. In this way, the current weak floodplain geomorphic dynamics has been evaluated by means of a hydraulic model. Different topographic scenarios, based on changes in the hydraulic river-floodplain connectivity, have been generated in order to analyse their potentially beneficial effect in the floodplain geomorphic dynamics. The hydraulic model used is based on the 2D transient shallow water equations on irregular bed solved with an explicit finite volume upwind scheme able to compute flow advance over dry bed.
