Abstract: The sources of the Yangtzi and the Yellow Rivers originate from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau with sea level elevation over 3000 meters. Under the conditions of increasingly greenhouse effect and climatic changes, hydrologic and weather extreme events in the sources of the Yangtzi and the Yellow Rivers bring about large impacts on these two basins and human society. In the present paper the variations of temporal, spatial and linear trend of annual mean rainfall, and daily rainfall extreme events are analysed by means of daily precipitation from 1961 to 2006. The results showed that rainfall extremes, including maximum daily rainfall (R1d), dates of rainfall extreme, the greatest 5-day total rainfall (R5d) and the greatest 3-day total rainfall (R3d) in source of Yellow River, are more than these in sources of the Yangtzi River; that there are reversed linear time trends in the two sources, i.e., decrease in the Yellow River and increase in the Yangtzi River.
