Abstract: Typhoon Morakot in 2009 was one of the deadliest typhoons ever in Taiwan due to extremely heavy rainfall with 2,777 mm during its landfall causing massive flooding and devastating mudslides in the southern Taiwan. In this study, the Typhoon Morakot in terms of the heavy rainfall, track and intensity was studied using a non-hydrostatic mesoscale model, MM5, with different physics for moisture. The effects of topography and typhoon bogus scheme were also investigated. From the results, the Schultz scheme showed more accurate results in terms of rainfall than mixed-phase and graupel scheme. The topography of Taiwan with high mountains showed big influence on precipitation but not in the typhoon's track. The bogus scheme showed good performance in the typhoon track and intensity. The simulation used here can be useful for not only reproduction but also prediction, which can be useful forcing for storm waves and storm surge calculation as well.
