Abstract: An unsteady 1D flow model was developed for a river with vegetated floodplains. The basic form of the non-linear St Venant equations combined with retention effects of the vegetated areas on flood wave conveyance were used in the model. The model was applied to the Lower Biebrza River, situated in the north-eastern part of Poland, flowing through the last extensive, fairly undisturbed rivermarginal peatland in Europe. The status of vegetation in this area depends on floods, which occur every year. The friction coefficients of vegetation (reeds, sedges, grasses, bushes as well as trees and scrubs) in floodplains were determined by field monitoring. Water level observations collected by an automatic monitoring system were used in calibration and validation process. The model was calibrated and validated for flood events in 2006 and 2007 year.
