Mound Formation by Slurry Jets on a Slope in a Water Pond

Abstract: The development of sediment deposition formed by continuous injection of slurry flow from a circular nozzle of 12 mm on a slope into a water pond is reported in this paper. Effect of bed slope on mound formation was studied by employing horizontal bed and inclined planes of 5 and 10 degrees. Growth of mound height, lateral and longitudinal profiles were examined for three water depths. Longitudinal profiles of depositions during the development phase of the mounds were approximately similar, and they can be normalized with the maximum height and half-width length scales. Two parameters of water level, h and maximum mound height, Hm ax were found to be effective for prediction of the deposition shape and its development. From observations, when the water level was shallow, it appeared that the deposition peak shifted gradually upstream until it blocked the nozzle. In deep water condition, the peak location was unchanged until the deposition height reached the value of Hmax.
