Abstract: The Water Resources Alliance is undertaking the replacement of the fine screening facility at Melbourne Water's Eastern Treatment Plant. In order to fully understand the complex hydraulic flow of wastewater through the proposed facility under a range of operating conditions, a scale model was constructed. The model was used to optimise the design and to confirm some of the key operating characteristics of the new facility. One of these was an assessment of velocities and turbulence throughout the facility, which resulted in minimisation of influent pumping energy and optimisation of the size and layout of the inlet to provide even flow distribution to the screens. The maximum operating water level and emergency bypass capacity of the facility were confirmed using the model, along with the potential for grit settlement and floating scum accumulation.
