Abstract: The use of 2D-Hydrodynamic models is now well established as the norm. However the most common approach is the traditional methodology of running a hydrologic model of the catchment to feed hydrographs to the hydraulic model. This methodology, although it appears robust is prone to both errors and manipulation of parameters. That is the hydrologic model parameters can be and are adjusted to suit the results produced by the hydraulic model, which in turn has its parameters adjusted to provide a validation of flood levels. It can be seen that unless the modellers are suitably experienced both parameters in the hydrologic and hydraulic model can be wrongly adjusted and still produce what appears as a valid hydraulic calibration. The alternate approach and the subject of this paper direct rainfall on the 2D-hydraulic model grid, does not suffer from this artefact. This paper will show that ANUGA (2-D hydraulic model) can model flood levels accurately, and get the hydrology right.
