Abstract: Debris availability, mobility and transportability are considered to be the key factors influencing debris potential at a site. The character of debris arriving at a structure can influence both the type of blockage mechanism triggered by the debris and the timing of that blockage. The key consideration influencing whether the debris forms a major blockage or is washed through the structure is the interaction between the structures geometry (structure width in particular) and the debris quantum and geometry (primarily length). An ARI neutral, simplified procedure for estimating the debris potential at a site, reflecting these factors is presented together with an ARI neutral simplified procedure for estimating blockage levels at a structure. The procedure outlined is then applied to a worked example.
