The Effect of Pipe Wall Roughness and Network Geometry on the Design and Performance of Pressurised Sewerage Networks

Abstract: Pressurised sewerage networks consist of property pumps connecting to a pressurised reticulation network. Key factors for the design and operation of these systems include the pipe wall roughness, k, and network geometry, as can be characterised by the compactness factor. Seven networks were analysed to determine the sensitivity of pressures to these two factors and to identify any relationships that may exist. The results challenge the assumption that pump pressures always have a direct relationship with pipe wall roughness. Anomalies in the friction head losses for the commonly design value of 0.75 mm were observed, suggesting higher k values may not necessarily result in higher pump pressures. Further, the relationships between the compactness factor for network geometry and the probability distribution of friction losses are presented.
