Abstract: Chutes and stepped spillways are used to provide controlled release of the flows and overflows into the downstream of a dam in flood regimes. Many researches have been conducted on the stepped spillways and the effects of different factors influencing energy dissipation, such as overall slope of spillways, slope of steps, and steps with end sills. In this study, three different experimental models of stepped spillway with different slopes, step numbers, dimensions and end sills were built; then the effects of end sills and end sill heights on energy dissipation were studied. The current study demonstrated that the height of the end sills is an influencing factor on energy dissipation along with the flow discharge and the slope of the spillway. In the present study, an equation for the estimation of energy dissipation in stepped spillways with end sills proposed. It has also verified that when end sills are installed on the steps, compared to steps without end sills, energy dissipation rate increases 5 to 10 percent.
