Inclusion of Long-Term Climate Change Impact in Sydney Catchment Authority's Water Supply Planning Process

Abstract: The SCA does long-term planning for the reliable water supply to its customers and to do that the water supply system model needs to be updated with hydrology and other climatological data. Its impact has so far not been taken into account in the long-term planning process. This paper describes the inclusion of climate change impact in SCA's long-term water supply planning process and particularly it's impact on water supply yield. Three climate change scenarios were selected for this study and rainfall and temperature data were downscaled from Global Climate Model (GCM) model. Rainfalls were analysed and then converted to inflows using Rainfall – Runoff models. Low annual level persistence was found in the downscaled rainfall sequences and in the inflows for future climates. The low level of persistence has implications for the drought security.
