Abstract: The Auckland region contains the largest city of New Zealand (Auckland) and has the highest population growth. It has previously experienced water shortages as occurred in 1994. These shortages have provided the impetus for the present study to develop a short-term water demand forecasting model operating on monthly basis for the Auckland region in order to assist in managing any future water shortages. We developed a short-term water demand forecasting model based on the Time Series Analysis and the Multiple Regression (TSAMR) techniques. The model produced reliable predictions of water demands in comparison to the observed water consumptions in the six subregions of the Auckland region. We found that variables such as “mean air temperature” and the demographic variable such as “population” significantly influence the short-term water demands of the region.
