Predicting Inundation Extents for Different Frequency Rainfalls in Upper Gin River Basin, Sri Lanka

Abstract: Floods become leading frequent global natural catastrophes and the need of flood disaster mitigation inventions is highlighted by many researchers. During the last decades a variety of advanced hydrological models have been developed in connection with flood forecasting that are successfully applied in major river basins across the globe. However, deficiency of quality data for calibration is the main constraint to achieve sound outputs particularly in the developing countries. This paper addresses above issue with a simplified yet reliable approach using HEC model which is developed by US army corps of Engineers. The study area is located within the Gin-river of southern Sri Lanka which is vulnerable for frequent flood hazards. The stages and the inundation extents for four different design storms have been generated which would be useful for future infrastructure planning within the area. The adopted methodology in this research is applicable in many other data scarce basins.
