Abstract: This paper provides an introduction to conceptual loss models for design flood estimation and outlines the limitations of the current information on losses in Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR). Some recent work on the distribution of losses is then presented which demonstrates that, while the magnitude of losses may vary between different catchments, the shape of the distribution is remarkably similar. Recommendations are then made for the revision of the loss information in ARR which involve the empirical analysis of data to estimate loss values for a large number of catchments across Australia and review of design guidance on estimating the effective impervious areas for urban catchments.
