Abstract: For the numerical simulation of flow processes in hydrosystems including complex flow conditions such as wetting and drying, sharp fronts or complex topographies, special robust numerical schemes should be chosen. A simplified version of the numerical FVM scheme based on the HLLC approximate Riemann solver has been implemented for the solution of the shallow water equations. We analyzed the accuracy of the model for two benchmarks with analytical solutions. In a preliminary study, we investigated a heavy rainfall event and the runoff generation in a small alpine catchment. First results look promising and we will further investigate the suitability of our shallow water solver as an alternative or further development of classical rainfall-runoff models.
