Abstract: The characteristic of vortex structure in stilling basin of multi-horizontal submerged jets was investigated by using PIV measurement and numerical simulation. The numerical model is based on Navier-Stokes equations, where the free surface is represented by using a Mixture algorithm. The turbulence dynamics are represented by using RNG k-ε model. The computed values were compared with experiment results and the agreement between the two was satisfactory. The results show that vortices with horizontal axis and vertical vortex do not coincide in space. The vortices with horizontal axis only affect the position of the tail of vertical vortices attached to slab of stilling basin. The vertical vortices were continuously formed and disappeared, appearing randomly near the slab. It proves that the PIV and numerical simulation are effective ways to investigate the complex flow pattern and energy dissipation in stilling basin.
