Abstract: Almost ten years ago the author of this paper developed a modelling technique for twodimensional hydraulic models. The technique was simple and despite some earlier resistance from the industry, has established itself as a preferred method of preliminary broad-scale flood risk assessment. The application of this technique has been mostly in urban areas where flood risk assessment is usually required on a catchment scale. This modelling technique is based on applying rainfall directly on to the two-dimensional grid of a hydraulic model and routing the runoff within the hydraulic model. This approach eliminates/minimises the need for hydrologic modelling for runoff estimation. All major commercial two-dimensional modelling systems now offer this approach as a standard functionality within the software. This paper describes the technique, presents its history and evolution and discusses its current uses. The limitations of this technique are also highlighted.
