Abstract: Application of splitters on crest spillways is an effective and economical method to dissipate the flood water energy. In the present work number of experiments was conducted in a large physical model to study the efficiency of different types of splitters. Splitters with different dimensions and arrangements were installed on the spillway face and their performance was studied. Several experiments were conducted with and without splitters and the flow condition over the splitters and the scour depth in the plunge pool were compared. Two sizes of bed material were used in these experiments. The effect of tail water was also studied on scour depth and performance of the splitters. Experiments showed that the best length to width ratio of splitters was about 1.3. In addition it was found that the best length of the splitters was 2/3 of the head over the spillway. With using splitters, the maximum depth of the scour hole at the plunge pool reduced by about 16% compared with spillway without splitters.
