Simplification Strategies for Water Distribution System Modelling

Abstract: Some simplification strategies for water distribution network simulation models are presented herein. They are achieved by using the recently developed Enhanced Global Gradient Algorithm (EGGA). EGGA enables an operator to simulate a hydraulic system after removing interior/serial nodes without compromising the energy and the mass balance. The removed nodes are those of degree two, where the degree of a node is the number of pipes connecting that node, Thus, there are fewer demand nodes and pipes in the model topology. Furthermore, the EGGA formulation is equally robust in terms of sensitivity to the uncertainties of boundary conditions with respect to a classic GGA. This paper analyses two simplification strategies based on EGGA applying them to a real large size water network. The results show significant computational efficiency gains without sacrificing the accuracy of the results.
