Abstract: Several studies related to wave transmission through coastal structures give important empirical formulae for the design process. However, there is still a lack of similar analysis for submerged breakwaters, one of the most important coastal structures used for shoreline protection as well as for port structures defence. This paper presents some measurements that were carried out in the unidirectional wave tank of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto using several models of submerged breakwaters (smooth and rough type, with different slopes, crest widths and for different water depths and model scales). The tested random wave conditions included several wave heights and periods. The obtained results were fitted to simple log approximations as a function of the transmissibility factor.
