Abstract: With the development of algorithms allowing the extraction of quantitative information from flow images, namely Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV), imaging techniques have evolved from merely visualization tools to powerful measurement techniques. With these techniques, two or even three components of the whole velocity field can be measured in a non intrusive way. A field of application of imaging techniques certainly concerns transient flow phenomena, and among them dam-break flows. In this paper the initial stages of a onedimensional dam break flow over a bed of idealized sediments (PVC pellets) were studied using a fast camera with an acquisition frequency up to 1000 frames per second. Using the fast acquisiton camera a statistical analysis of the dam-break flow after the dam-break wave collapse is also presented.
