Abstract: The estimation of tropical cyclone intensity is an important issue in hydrometeorology. However, there is virtually no improvement in the estimation of tropical cyclone intensity in last two decades. In this paper, based on the sea surface temperature and atmospheric factors, the back propagation network (BPN) is used to estimate the maximum potential intensity (MPI) of typhoons. Under the same conditions, a numerical model developed by Bister and Emanuel (1998) is also used to calculate the MPI. Finally, results of these two methods are compared with the observed maximum wind speeds of tropical cyclones. The results show that MPI calculated by BPN is better than that estimated by the model of Bister and Emanuel. In conclusion, the proposed technique is expected to be useful to estimate the maximum potential intensity of typhoons.
