Abstract: The Direct Rainfall technique has become more prevalent in Australia in undertaking flooding and drainage studies. The technique applies rainfall directly to a 2D hydraulic model, rather than using traditional hydrological modelling techniques. The majority of the research on the method to date has come through engineering consultancies through practice. There has been limited published data on the technique, and in most cases, the published data focuses on individual case studies. This paper draws on investigations on catchments in New South Wales and Victoria where the Direct Rainfall methodology has been adopted. These catchments range in different topography, drainage characteristics and land-uses. It compares the methodology with traditional hydrological modelling techniques to test its suitability as an alternative.
