Assessment of Morphological Properties of a Braided River Predicted by a Process-Based Model

Abstract: A numerical model based on the basic physical laws of hydraulics and sediment transport and some empirical formulae is used to simulate the suspended sediment transport and river channel evolution processes. The model has been set-up for initially a rectangular flat bed channel. Gradually, a braided river is developed, with channel nodes and geomorphology units common in natural braided rivers such as Y-shaped junction and pool-bar unit. Braiding evolution and mechanisms are analysed, and some key river processes produced by the model appear to be similar to those found in natural braided rivers.
